Jawbone Icon: Hero

After seriously misplacing my standard Apple headset to the point where I have no idea where it is (this hardly ever happens to me), I decided it was time to get a gadget that I have been wanting to get for quite some time, a bluetooth headset. As I make quite a few calls where I love being handsfree, I wanted to try out the wireless handsfree options as well to see how it works for me.

What I picked up was a Jawbone Icon both because I’ve seen it around a lot and because it got a great review from my buddy Terry White. Read on for my impressions on the headset.

FaceTime on the iPhone 4The ability to do FaceTime calls has been available for about half a year now and was applauded when announced together with the new iPhone 4 at WWDC back in June. As time has gone by however, I have myself only used this feature once and that as a test to see if it actually worked as promised, right after getting my phone.

This leads me to ask the question, “Why am I not using FaceTime much?”. After all, this is a good service with a stunning UI even though it has a few quirks in it. When I sit down and think about this, I come up with two answers.

  1. First it is the entire idea about video calls. Being a teenager (allbeit, with only a year and a quarter left until 20), I should be the right person to judge this. I am not though. To start with, I do not call people that much, neither do I text people a whole lot. When I do it is usually not for the sole purpose of general socializing.I have never been to keen on the video chat idea. For some situations it is lovely. When it comes to meetings or get-togethers that you are able to have over the entire globe, the technology is just amazing. When it comes to general chatter, I just don’t like it as much. Perhaps it is because I am that used to instant messaging systems (where I also do not use video chat) and sitting in whatever outfit that suits me at any given moment. Showing yourself on video needs preparation and making yourself look presentable.
  2. Secondly FaceTime is only available through WiFi networks. This is truly the only major factor that keeps FaceTime from getting big. If I could call anyone in the world from anywhere in the world, whenever, I would be much more likely to use FaceTime for many more calls. As it stands now there is a certain hassle connected with making sure you are on a good WiFi connection and then arranging the call (again, whenever you know you are going to be on WiFi).

Then of course there is the fact that you don’t look that flattering when a camera is stuck under your head pointed right up…

Anyhow, those are my ideas on why FaceTime is not gaining the traction it probably should be and why we are not hearing much about it. Now I am interesting in knowing if you use FaceTime much, a little or never and what your reasons are!

The iPhone 4 is now released here in Sweden (finally) and at the same minute of the release, I ordered mine online from my carrier. The estimated delivery date is on August 5th, a bit slow on delivery but still nice enough with no queuing and no pre-orders.

Come Thursday I will hopefully have the phone and let you know what I think.

When Apple first demoed iOS 4 back in March (then called iPhone OS 4) I was very excited to see Bluetooth Keyboard Support listed. This is one of these things that I have wanted for a long while on the iPhone, which would enable me to do more on the iPhone in terms of productivity and writing.

Why do I want this so badly?

It is a valid question, I give you that. While I want an iPad too and expect it to be that middle device for me that saves me bringing the computer, still getting a screen larger than the iPhone’s, being able to type on the iPhone with an external keyboard is packing it full with a brand new way for us to use it.

Being in school for most of the year, I do much writing. Some days, I do bring my laptop, when I know we will be doing writing in class that we are allowed to do on computers (school computers, although all Macs, are usually taken very quickly). If you have seen my bag that I bring, you would know that it is usually filled with books I need to bring weighing me down as it is already. In all honesty, the bag I have used for almost two years broke earlier this spring because of the weight all the time. Having an iPad, or the iPhone even, saves me a lot of weight just for being able to type into a computer.

The countdown has been on since long ago, but it is only just recently that it has begun to sink in that my flight leaves on Monday. For me, this is a trip that is a first in many ways but will of course be so much fun!

I wanted to share some of tools that I am using while traveling to help me go through it smoothly and to keep me sane when I actually get over there.

Photoshop World Official iPhone App

Not starting with the official Photoshop World iPhone App would be terrible! I love the official app, made by Shawn Welch that gives you full scheduling features to plan out your conference week. Lovely!

TripIt

The free online service TripIt is just terrific. You just forward your confirmation emails to them and they automatically add it to your trip you are planning. This means that you always have the flight details with you by just logging onto TripIt.

They also have a mobile app for the iPhone but more on that below.

FlightTrack Pro and TripDeck

While the TripIt app works for checking your details, TripDeck allows you to fully manage your trip from your iPhone. Now syncing with TripIt, you have a perfect app to use on the iPhone to get to your trip information. It will also send you flight status through push notifications.

FlightTrack Pro is the app that will allow you to track your different flights. Imagine knowing that a connecting flight is cancelled before entering the first one! Someone coming to visit you that you need to pick up by plane? Add it and get real time flight info, including its position in the air.

Tweetie

Twitter is absolutely huge and there will be loads of twittering going on at Photoshop World so as an iPhone user, I have Tweetie on my phone to be able to tweet there as well from my iPhone. It has got a great UI and all the Twitter features.
