Web Design 101: Creating Your First WordPress Theme

Because I have gotten tons of questions about starting to develop WordPress themes, I’ll be holding a FREE webinar on how to create you first WordPress theme on May 17th at 2p.m EDT. You don’t have to register in advance at all. Simply go to the webinar page to find out the exact in your time zone and mark the time in your calendar. The webinar room itself will be open roughly 15 minutes before the webinar starts.

In the webinar I’ll be showing you how WordPress themes are built-up and at the same time show you how to move from a design done in HTML code into a WordPress theme.

I hope you’ll join me on May 17, 2p.m EDT for the free webinar.

TwitterI wrote a couple of entries ago about starting to use Bit.ly Pro for custom URL shortening for Bernskiold Media (bmedia.co). Starting the the good things first, it has been nothing short of an excellent experience with Bit.ly Pro and it is cool to use your own shortener. The only gripe I have with it is that it is just an alias and not a pure custom shortener. This means that you cannot reuse hashes that has been used with the regular bit.ly. What a shame!

Anyhow, the single biggest dislike that I have is not with Bit.ly Pro itself but with my Twitter application of choice: Twitter for Mac. A few weeks ago, Tweetie for Mac was updated and released as Twitter for Mac (following being bought by Twitter). The update is 99% positive for me, except that the app now automatically shortens links.

For most users, this is a behavior that might be positive, but it gets ridiculous when it starts shortening my already shortened links. It’s not just my custom ones either, but every short link is replaced by their own t.co shortener.

The solution is simple of course. Post links from the web interface or just switch application. The latter is something that I don’t want to do because, as I said, I like 99% of Twitter for Mac. Using the web interface is just a pain with multiple accounts because, hey! That’s part of what I use the app for in the first place.

End of rant.

Bit.ly is one of the leaders in URL shortening

Last week I got thinking when I saw the new Adobe short URLs that they are using (adobe.ly) and figured that it is not a bad idea to follow on the idea of doing custom URL shortening for my company, Bernskiold Media. Whilst thinking about this, I remembered what my friend A.J. Wood did back a long time ago, specifically starting to do his own URL shortening.

Primarily this will give visitors and fans of Bernskiold Media a sense of security, because whenever they see a link shortened with the domain bmedia.co, they know it is solid and valid content that has been shortened by us. So just the other day I got invited to the Bit.ly Pro beta which I applied for. There is really only one reason why I chose them: They are really good at what they do. Plus, it does help that the service is free.

Setup was a breeze and now, all links posted from Bernskiold Learning and Bernskiold Media will all be shortened based on bmedia.co, just like this example here which will take you to the article I wrote on Monday on 11 Important Steps to Optimize WordPress and Increase Performance: http://bmedia.co/ghtHyG

Tell me, do you use a custom URL shortening domain or do you just use the general ones?

Join me in a first online webinar on the new Creative Suite 5 themed specifically for designers.

In the webinar, we are going to cover some new features in the CS5 throughout the Design Premium suite and how some of these new features can come to great use in your design projects. Instead of just looking at each feature on its own the goal is to give you ideas on how you can fit them into your own projects while I throw in my favorite new, smaller additions.

Look forward to a filled hour going from Photoshop, through Illustrator and into InDesign and the brand new FlashCatalyst, showing you a bit what you can do there after working in both Photoshop and Illustrator.

WHEN IS THE SEMINAR?

The seminar will be on May 26th at 2p.m Eastern, 8 p.m Central European, 7p.m London and 11 a.m Pacific.
