Scanner

This question popped up in my head a couple of days ago. Let me give you a little back story. I got a notification when signing into my PayPal account that because I have received a certain amount of money over the course of this year, I had to further validate the account by submitting proof of identity and address to them, in order to comply with European Anti-Money Laundering Laws.

All well and good and nothing to complicated. Submitting proof of identity couldn’t be simpler as a phone bill is a good document for that. Fortunately for me, I get my cellphone bills through PDFs online. Simple as that, just upload one to PayPal which was perfectly well accepted.

Here is where it gets interesting. I thought I was going to be a little lazy and just take a good photo of my drivers license (accepted identity proof). Apparently this was not an accepted way and I wonder if a scan of the same will indeed be accepted (we shall see).

This leads me to asking what exactly the difference is between a scan and a photo. Technically the scan is just what a photo is, an image of something. The difference to me is just that the scan is done slightly differently than the photo but the end result being the very same, an image of a document or similar that is now digitized.

What are your opinions? Should photos and scans be regarded as two very separate things or is it just the very same thing with different names?

NAPP - SwedenA few weeks ago I was asked if I wanted to be part of a new project that NAPP (National Association of Photoshop Professionals) is doing by being an admin for a brand new localized Facebook page, NAPP – Sweden. How could I say no. Firstly, it is an honor to be asked and secondly, I love NAPP (if you aren’t a member, you should join!) as it is just such a great community.

The result of this is now live and has been kicking for a couple of weeks now. If you are Swedish (or speak Swedish) you can now be a part of the fully localized group with news, tips, tricks and contests in Photoshop all in Swedish. It doesn’t matter if you are a NAPP member or not. If you aren’t, join the page to find out the benefits and be part of contests and maybe you’ll win a membership and get to try out a year!

If you’re not in Sweden, check out some of my buddies who are the admins of some other local pages, one which is hopefully more local to you: NAPP – UK, NAPP – Canada, NAPP – Arizona, NAPP – Chicago, Illinois.

A couple of months ago me and my friends Firgs, Janine Smith and A.J. Wood decided to start a brand new podcast in a field which we felt were lacking a good one. The result is here and after many weeks in preparation and scheduling we are proud to bring you the very first episode of the Designer Roundtable Podcast, a roundtable discussion between us on the topics of design, business and freelance and we would love for you to come chat with us!

Today is a big day for us as the first ever episode is released and you can go ahead and tune in to it right on the DRT Podcast website. In this episode we are talking about how it is being your own boss and share our personal experiences as well as give some tips.

As the show is brand new, we are still waiting for the iTunes folks to approve the show but when they do we will be right there in iTunes for you to subscribe and never miss out on a show. If you use another podcaster, here is the feed.

Alright, I won’t keep you here any longer. Head over to the site now and tune in to the first episode.

Skype the other day announced the release of a brand new beta version of Skype 5.0 for the Mac, adding in a bunch of features that Windows users have been able to enjoy for quite a while now.

Group Video Calling

The feature I have been waiting hard for getting on the Mac since it was announced for Windows has been the group video calling. In my interest area is of course podcast recording and now being able to see video for everyone that is talking without requiring a different computer or virtual machine for each person.

Improved Interface

The rest new with Skype is mainly the new interface which I have to say that I like. I’ve never been a fan of the multi-window approach of previous Skype iterations and I do think this all-in-one window is a big improvement albeit on that will take some getting used to.

Below is a five minute video from Skype showing off the new features. Should you want to try yourself (which I highly recommend you do), you can download the beta from the Skype website.

Mac OS X: Spaces

Spaces in OS X

I am a big spaces user. On my MacBook Pro which is my primary machine, I had configured a setup of six spaces where different type of applications were on each one. For example I had own spaces for: general browsing; graphic/web design and development; business, mail and to-do (productivity); writing; video and sound editing and another space which I didn’t use that much.

Then a couple of weeks ago, Apple previewed the upcoming version of OS X, dubbed Lion. In that demo they showed off mission control where they’ve consolidated Exposé, the Dashboard and Spaces into one and from the demo it sounded quite like Spaces were not going to exist in the same way as they currently do.

For me it is of course a little loss even though I wouldn’t skip the upgrade because of it however in order to start kicking myself back into the “one-space workflow”, I decided the other day to deactivate it from my account. Who knows, maybe I’ll just start using Exposé more now that my desktop is more cluttered. One thing is certain, I love the “Hide” feature of all mac apps (Command + H).
